About
The Burke Center for Ecosystem Research is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit based in Ashland, Wisconsin. The center was founded to continue the work of the Mary Griggs Burke Center for Freshwater Innovation, whose high-profile water-related scientific research, communication and policy work, and competitive student research opportunities, were signature programs at Northland College for nearly a decade. Following Northland’s closure in May 2025, the new Burke Center was created, taking on a slightly different name that reflects a broadened mission that allows for non-water-related environmental work to be conducted at the new center.

The Burke Center works in partnership and collaboration with a host of organizations, agencies, academic institutions, and independent researchers, and its work encompasses a wide range of interdisciplinary research focusing on the Great Lakes region and beyond. The Burke Center’s team of experts is dedicated to advancing knowledge of both freshwater and terrestrial environments, developing innovative solutions to ensure the long-term sustainability of these vital ecosystems, and training the next generation of freshwater stewards.
The Burke Center has two primary focal areas:
-
Science initiatives focus on research, restoration and protection projects centered in the Great Lakes region, especially the Lake Superior watershed.
-
Communication and Policy initiatives, by contrast, have a much broader geographic focus, highlighting natural resource issues — with a strong focus on water — from a regional, national, and international perspective. The center specializes in translating science to better inform policy and educate the public.
