The Mary Griggs Burke Center for Freshwater Innovation at Northland College will continue its water-related research, despite Northland’s closure.
The center will be known as Burke Center for Ecosystem Research. The name change is the result of a multi-month effort to make the center a nonprofit organization following the announcement Northland was closing in March, 2024.
Executive Director Peter Annin told the Daily Press the change meant losing the space it had occupied at the school. Northland plans to sell the buildings.
“It’s been a tragic time here for all who are affiliated with the college. We wanted to stay, but we understand,” he said. “But at least we are able to carry on some of the environmental mission that Northland has been known for since the 1970s.”
